Welcome to Bonne Femme Vegetable Farm.
My name is Brownie, and I'm your guide today. Let me tell you about our
farm and my friends here...
We
live on a 30 acre farm just 10 minutes from Broadway in Columbia, Missouri. Even though it's just
3/4 of a mile from the city limits now (it used to be farther from town), you can still feel the country atmosphere here. I like it.
This is our 100 year old farm house.
Sometimes
in the mornings in the spring the fog hangs heavy on the farm, and the
hummingbirds love these mornings!
Sometimes later in the day Mike works on the garden plans while Tabasco Cat
checks over his changes and dreams of hummingbirds. More about Tabby
later... This is Blue. Unlike Shauna, Dolly doesn't get attached to
the other farm animals. She keeps pretty much to herself, though she keeps
an eye on everything that goes on. She's always there to back up Shauna
whenever something new happens. In the spring, Mike trims their wool. Dolly doesn't mind
so much, so it's easy to work with her. But Shauna doesn't like to be
touched; she tries every way to be uncooperative. She spits at Mike, kicks him, walks
in circles, and sits down while he's trying to work on her. Poor Mike... Good luck on your next
trimming season.
Meet
some of our other family members. This is Merna when
she was a baby.
Here comes
Shauna. She is a llama. She protects other farm animals from
predators. In fact, during the mating season for goats, Shauna protected
the does
(female goats) from the buck (male goat). I saw she stood in front of
the does and
kept spitting at the buck. She's kind of like a very strict old aunt.
Nobody had any fun when she was around, until she got to know the buck and
accepted him as a suitable suitor for her nieces.
Here
you are. This is Dolly (llama).
Guess
what?!
They love handsome animals. Our neighbor bought a
handsome horse with blue eyes, and lets him run free just across
the street from us. One day, he was browsing along the fence. Our ladies
saw him and ran to the edge of our farm where they
could take a good look at him. They were hypnotized by his beauty, so they
couldn't move for about 10 minutes. Well, when I saw them looking
like that, I thought "they're like two middle aged ladies watching Tom Cruise eating at
a restaurant through the window." No shame!
