Molasses Sugar Cookies

  • ¾ cups Shortening                                    ½ teaspoon Cloves
  • 1 cup Sugar                                              ½ teaspoon Ginger
  • ¼ cup Molasses                                          1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 Egg                                                       ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cups Sifted All-purpose Flour                    2 teaspoon Baking soda

Melt shortening in a three or four quart saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat; allow to cool. Then add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and salt; add these to first mixture. Mix well and chill thoroughly. Form in one-inch balls; roll in sugar and place on greased cookie sheet two inches apart. Bake in moderately hot oven, 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
